About Beth
Breaking News! Our Second Chance Pitch
(The 9th web pitch of the CBC Dragons' Den (Season 9) - 8 January 2015)
The Fiedler's were on the CBC Dragons' Den (Season 8, Episode 13)
22 January 2014 (Wednesday) 8:00 pm EST
The Fiedler's shared their vision (EZ Color Trading Academy) with the dragons. Unfortunately, they're barking up the wrong trees as most dragons knew nothing about Futures trading. Even The Fiedler's did not get a deal, most of you would appreciate the efforts they spent to get there. Beth was a "cool cucumber" and shined through resistance and reluctance! You can definitely learn from her .. smile ..
Early Life
Beth was born in Hong Kong. Her father passed away when she was 6. For over two decades, she was haunted by one long bad dream. Night after night, she struggled endlessly to overcome an unknown force. Imagine yourself bound in your worst nightmare, unable to move an inch or speak a word.
As she grew up, she began to withdraw from those around her. She seldom spoke or uttered a simple word, like yes or no. The best she did was nodding or shaking her head. It took her years before she started to realize her innocence for not understanding the hardship her mother went through. Preoccupied with the sudden loss of her husband and became a single parent of four small children, her mother had very little time to stop and see what was going deep down in her second daughter. Turning from ignorance, Beth admires her mother with all her heart. She told herself: "It doesn't matter how many times I fall, as long as I have the courage to get up and start all over again."
Mother Nature was a great medicine to Beth. She spent hours watching and feeding seagulls, sitting on a staircase overlooking Lake Ontario, cycling along the lake shores, or playing hide-and-seek with the animal friends made her feel the whole world was in her hands. There is nothing ugly to the Mother Nature. Everything has its place and is beauty under the sun. Life is a precious gift and she promises herself to enjoy each passing moment.
Her mission: "I will live the life of my choice and strive to reach my dream."
Life Twisting Points
Emigration to Canada - U-Education Dream
It took Beth some years to save enough before pursuing her dream to complete a University degree. Actually it's also her mother's dream. She started a part-time post-graduate University degree after emigrating to Canada. For the first year she took four evening courses and one weekend course. When she asked her co-worker why there were no courses on Friday and Sunday evenings, Marion teased her that she's probably the only one interested in them. Upon completion of the first year studies, she decided to study full-time and work part-time. Those two years were the happiest time of her life.
Beth did not mind the 150% workload so that she could finish her degree in a timely manner. She lived on bread alone for over six months. Could not even afford to have butter or jam. To save a subway token (less than US$2.00), Beth would choose to walk for an hour under severe cold weather (-30 degree C). She felt content to sleep on the floor with paper cartons and a thin sleeping bag as the box spring and mattress. Most would agree that it's miserable yet she felt very happy and fulfilled. Beth completed her University degree within three years and was on the Dean's Honor list throughout.
Education and Event Management Professional
Beth fell in love with training after years of Toastmasters learning! She has a strong desire to reciprocate what she gained from Toastmastering. Her starting a consulting business (= leaving a senior mangement position with a financial institution) had surprised a lot of people.
Multi-Cultural Background
Beth is a dynamic lady with extensive life experiences in both Eastern and Western environments. She has gained substantial insight into different organizational cultures and management practices from her various management positions and consultation projects. For example
- General Manager, Fleming International Limited, Hong Kong & Shenzhen
- Assistant Vice President/Deputy Division Head of Operations, AIG Finance (Hong Kong) Limited, Hong Kong
- Senior Credit Administrator/Loan Officer, Swiss Bank Corporation (Canada), Toronto
- Office Manager/Project Manager, WJS International Inc, Beijing
- Assistant Manager, Employee Development, Scotia Capital, Toronto
Her quality leadership and passion have attracted lots of media attention. Beth was interviewed by AlterMedic.com, Metro Broadcast Hong Kong and Toronto CBCC. Stories about her vision were reported on The Record, Oriental Daily, Apple Daily, Hong Kong Economic Times, The Sun, Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao, Central Magazine, Eat & Travel and Sisters.

How Can Beth Accomplish What She Has Accomplished?
Beth has proved her competence in moving mountains. The secret weapon she has been using to face and overcome life obstacles and challenges is:
CPR Commitment | Passion | great sense of Responsibility
Does Beth have regrets and missteps?
Certainly she did! Recalling what have happened up to this moment,
- she always misses developing a closer bond with her mother and siblings (she was on her own in different parts of the world for too long)
- her pride and ego had occasionally blocked her from making a more sensible decision
- she did not see a clear picture when she was desperate and ended up making a wrong move
Beth chose to accept the consequences and moved on. Pauses are good as long as she has the courage and strength to continue and faces the music again.
